The Proper Way To Install Crown Moulding

Anyone can claim to be able to install molding, but to do it well, it takes the skill and attention to detail of trained craftsmen who specialize in this demanding work. If your molding is installed wrong, there is little or nothing one can do about it, because separations in your corners will reappear over and over again, creating annoying, distracting eyesores, including cracks in the corners.

If you’re considering a crown molding installation in your home, the most important challenge for the installer is how the corners should be handled, because the rest of the work is fairly straightforward- just driving nails and filling the holes. A common mistake to avoid, is having a painter, handy man or even a general contractor do the molding installation. Why? Because installing crown molding, as with other architectural trim work is a specialized craft, and those who take on the task as an “add-on job,” generally lack the skills, specialized tools and the time-saving approaches developed by the experienced specialists at Spectacular Trim.

Properly installed crown molding, with its precise interlocking coped corners, will make your ceiling look like a picture frame. The crisp, gap-free corners will never require caulking or putty to hide flaws that commonly result from less-precise, mitered corners or improper measurements made by a less-experienced  installer.

There are those that will argue that a mitered joint is also a picture frame joint. But what they fail to point out, is that mitered picture frame joints are always reinforced in some manner by nails, staples or splines. A mitered joint that is only glued together, is weak and prone to eventually separate.

We know how and can perform both coped and mitered corner molding installation so we leave that decision to you, the customer. But, we definitely believe that a coped corner installation is the superior method. The good news for customers of Spectacular Trim is, over the years we have developed a system and approach that is often less expensive than what competitors charge to install moulding, and we are able to do the work in far less time, with much less jobsite mess.
